Rust Belt Thunder began as a story long before it became an album. In the novel, Nameless Cowfish: The Years Between the Stations, David Kitzmiller imagined what might have happened if a garage band from Sheridan, Indiana almost became famous. The book follows Jade and the band through borrowed instruments, half‑finished dreams, and the kind of ambition that feels too big for a small town. In the world of the novel, Rust Belt Thunder was their final record, a greatest hits collection from a band that never quite made it but came close enough to leave a mark.

This album is the tribute version of that fictional record. It is the kind of release a real band might get years after their breakup, when other artists step in to cover the songs that shaped them. The twist is that many of these songs never had a first version. They lived only in the pages of the book or in the notes I wrote during the years that inspired it. Some were written decades ago. Some were written new for the novel. All of them carried the spirit of a band that existed only in imagination.

Rust Belt Thunder is a tribute to a story, a band, and a time in my life when everything felt possible and impossible at the same time. It is the bridge between fiction and reality, between the songs I imagined and the songs these musicians brought into the world.

The James Fields Band, Some Guy Named Tim, Some Guy Named Tim’s Wife, and Tyler Travis and The Strummers came together to bring these songs to life. Each artist approached the tracks as if they were covering a band they had grown up listening to. They treated Nameless Cowfish like a real group with a real history, and in doing so, they made the fictional band feel more alive than ever.

The sound of this album comes from the Rust Belt itself. It comes from garages, bars, back roads, and the quiet corners of Sheridan where Jade and his friends tried to figure out who they were. It comes from the years between the stations, the moments when the radio crackles and you are not sure what song is coming next. It comes from the idea that even a band that never existed can still matter if the music feels true.
